The Festival is about more than just Hummingbirds
While the capturing, banding and release of hummingbirds is what brings the people to the Hummingbird Festival in Colon, Michigan, it is not the only reason to attend this festival. On the River Lake Inn's lawn, during the festival, you are likely to find art and educational booths. In the afternoon formal presentations are offered inside the restaurant, subjects such as the Great Lakes HummerNet project, organic gardening and Monarch Butterflies have been the topics. There are also a number of Nature Trails on the property, as well as the stunning Butterfly Gardens. You can also sign up for Adopt-a-Hummer and receive notification if your bird is recaptured after banding.

Booths at the Hummingbird festival, both art and informational, are based on nature themes. Do a little exploring of the grounds and you will find the Butterfly Garden and nature trails.

Hummingbird Festival Visiting Tips

  • The Hummingbirds are caught and released in the morning hours starting around 7:00. If you want to see the birds up close you will need to arrive at the festival early. Birds are caught through the morning, banded and released one at at time. If you arrive at the festival after 10:00 AM you may be too late to see the birds released. The number of birds released during the festival varies from year to year and is dependent on the number of humming birds captured.
  • You can walk the Nature Trails on your own or take a guided tour.
  • Even though the restaurant is closed you can still purchase a box lunch and eat it on the grounds.
